"Gear Up" for Holiday Traffic to Your Etsy Site

I've recently made a few adjustments to my Etsy site to help (Gertie) "Gear" Up for the holiday shoppers on Etsy. I don't have solid data but have definitely noticed an immediate positive difference... additional sales, inquiries and just plain old nice comments.

Maybe some of these ideas will work for you too! Aroooo!:
  • Change the header's appearance -- make it a "holiday shop".
  • Add some kind of promotion/discount for the holiday. I reduced my shipping by half. Shipping cost is a big deal to buyers, on Etsy and other retail sites. It's part economy and part psychology (as much of marketing/advertising is). If you ship for less, it saves the buyer dollars but there's the added element of trust. Consumers see stores that charge higher shipping as "gougers".
  • Minimize the text of your intro. If you go to your store home page and can't see some of the products WITHOUT scrolling down, it's time to cut text. If there's something you feel buyers must know -- reference it in the intro and direct them to your store profile. People shy away from long blocks of text.
  • Also, use bullets and paragraph returns to make text more digestible.
  • Showcase a holiday item or two. People are in "shop" mode instead of "browse" mode right now, and it will intensify over the next few weeks. Take advantage of it.
  • "RENEW a few" ... Regularly. The only way to stay on top of the listing pages is to post often. If you don't have more product, or if you don't want to double up listing the same thing, RENEW 3-5 items at least every other day. It's only 20 cents each -- a minimal investment for ROI of increased views and traffic.
  • BE SOCIAL! On Facebook, MySpace, etc.? Post something about your store, about something you just finish making for your store, about something cool you read on this Blog. Anything to drive interest -- and include a link to your store. Once again, people NEED to start shopping to get it all done in time. Handmade items are fantastic when buying for the person who "has everything."
  • Socialize! Tell everyone you know that you make and sell on Etsy. Tell them more than once too -- you'd be surprised how much people forget. Don't be annoying about it, but when people ask, "what's new?", tell them.
  • BLOG Comment on blogs you follow, or better yet, create your own.
    I did -- http://gertiegear.blogspot.com
Then, reference it and add links to your Facebook/MySpace pages. Send an email with a link directly to people that may have interest in a specific topic on your Blog.
  • Finally, if you can, create an "email blast" and send it to friends, family, neighbors, etc. If you have a good, relaxed relationship with your accountant, financial adviser, dentist, people at work... send it to them too! Make it less text and more graphics* -- "advertise" your special offer for the holidays and/or new stuff. Ask those people to send it to their networks. If they have purchased something from YOU, ask if they can add a personal "testimonial" note in your support.
  • Email blast format: include only a few key statements (less, in quantity -- is more, in quality). Use Bold, Italic, Underline styles to accent text. If adding color to text, choose one or two. Do NOT make a rainbow or use 10 different fonts -- it creates confusion and a big ole mess.
*IMPORTANT: make sure the graphic you email is small in file size and proper format that shows in the mail browser window. A jpeg will always work. The file should be NO larger than 500k -- ideally less than 200k. ALSO CRUCIAL, that the email blast contains a LINK directly to your store.

TIP: If you have Photoshop, make the jpeg by using the "Save for Web" tool instead of just "Save As" -- jpeg format. This will make the size smaller and you can preview the image quality and adjust as needed. If you have PS and don't know what I'm talking about, feel free to contact me for help.

This is the first email blast I sent out. The original file is a jpeg, only 192kb in size.
Click this image to see it actual size.

Flash has big plans, too, as seen in the picture! "A long winter's nap" applies year-round to this little guy!

Louise the Hawaiian Hula Girl

Layfayette, Lousiana Animal Aid held their annual "Bark in the Park" fund raiser event on October 6th, 2008. Etsy Beagles Team member, Howlin Hounds attended, entering her Basset girl Louise in the costume contest.

With all the grace of a professional, smell loving model, Lousie made everyone smile in her Howlin Hound original costume; a hawaiian hula girl outfit. They won a ribbon for all their hard work, plus helped animals in need. Check out the fun photos:

Brando the midnight Male model.

Brando /\

Here's a long overdue update from the great white north. I've been busy with the new competition, aka Arial, who's my 5th precious granddaughter. She lives a few blocks away, so she is primary in our household. Brando has had his nose out of joint for quite a while now.

Like, he knows he's not officially allowed on the leather furniture. He's pretty good about scampering off just before we enter the room, but lately, he's been bold enough to jump up there when one of us is sitting there, and looks surprised to see us. He'll look around and try to figure out how he accidentally could have possibly gotten on top of the cushions, and if you don't react, he'll just rest his head while he ponders how this could have happened. One eyebrow will raise, then lowers, the the other eyebrow , repeat. His head will finally come to rest on his masters knee, and he will look at me with the most pathetic "See, at least HE loves me" look you can imagine!

This has been going on for as long as we've had our little bundle of joy, Arial. But you can't begin to understand the shock I felt when I found out that Brando has been moon-lighting! I mean, I know the economy sucks, and we all do what we have to to survive, but being a male model for refrigerator magnets? I'm telling you, I about fell through the floor when I found this large magnet for sale. I have no idea how he was able to sneak out and travel to a big city and get these made, and Brando denies ever having done this, as he sits arrogantly sits atop our furniture, leaving ME with nothing to say but arrrooooohhhh!!

Cheers,
Cher

scenes from a pooch on a porch

Since we got a wicker loveseat for our porch, Lulu has found a great spot to enjoy the last days of summer and watch dogs with their people walk by. Steve likes the porch too for studying.

For some unexplainable reason Lulu looks awfully sad here!! Must be the basset in her!!

YAY! We've Got Authors!

I'm so happy that the invitations got to everyone! If anyone is not on the Contributors list, please send me your e-mail address so I can send you an invite to be an author on this blog! The August challenge was great fun, and we will be starting our next one, "Hounds and Harvest." It will be the team's Autumn Challenge, and will run Sept. 12 - Oct 19. You can make a fall-themed item or a halloween-themed item. I decided to end the Autumn challenge on Oct. 19th, so there will still be time for sellers/members to ship their items before Halloween. I will post the challenge thread in the Etsy Teams Forum, also. Sadly, I am linked to the Beagles Flickr page through my personal Flickr account, so I can't set up a collection or set for our challenges there. :( You are still welcome to post your challenge pics on our Flickr group page! The tags for the Hounds and Harvest challenge will be posted in the Etsy Forum thread on Sept. 12th.
I'd also like to ask that everyone on the team keep HowlinHounds, her family, and her furbabies Jingle and Louise in their prayers. Deb (howlin) lives in Louisiana, where hurricane Gustav hit, and with 2 more hurricanes on the way, that area is still very much on alert! Love ya, Deb! Please stay safe! Hugs to you and nose-kisses to those beautiful Bassett babies! :0)

ARRRROOOOOOO!

Hi, This is Tricia from kookyhandbags and talkofthe town on Etsy. Just thought I would show the latest photos of Miss Lulu Belle. This month of September will mark the one year anniversary that we adopted Lulu. She has been with us now for nearly a whole year, and we love her dearly! She is the best doggie...so cute and cuddly, friendly and funny, and a joy to have with us! Three cheers for Lulu!!!

Hi Etsy Beaglers!

I'm a new contributor here so I wanted to stop in and say HI, before I dash off for a few days on a semi-vacation.

I'll be taking my new granddaughter downstate to meet her old great-grandma for an intro. I have to leave my big beag and darling hubby here (the lucky guys!). But when I get back, I promise to tell you all about my moonlighting beagle.

Happy September days, I'll be bark!

I'm on a space kick!

It's my son's fault! I am getting ready to have a garage sale, and I asked my sons to go through all their old "stuff" that was stashed in the family room closet. My youngest son was quite into "aliens" and outer space at one time, and decided to part with a great bunch of little space-themed figures. They won't make it into the sale! ;) They had "pendants" written all over them (albeit in some planetary language only my son and I can understand). Anyway, this is my first, because he is SO CUTE! I named him Rocky Planet, and he is the biggest alien superstar/rock star ever! I had these fantastic vintage beads that I call glitter-beads, for lack of a better or known name. They are like sugar-beads, but have a smooth surface with tiny flecks of metallic gold. The swirled finish looked very planet-like to me, and I matched the colors of the beads to Rocky, his guitar, and his beautiful big green eyes. There are some vintage faceted purple lucite beads, and just for fun, some new plastic blue star beads, since Rocky is a star from beyond the stars! I've got more necklaces done, but have to wrangle with my biggest jewelry-marketing dilemma - pictures (shudder, shudder; excuse the pun)! Once I get some decent pics, more outer space jewelry will appear in my store: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5149442

Welcome to our blog!

I hope you enjoy the Etsy Beagle Street team blog! The Beagle Team is a group of artisans who sell their work on Etsy, the place for all things handmade. This is a new blog, which will be "under construction" for a while - not too long; just until I can get everything here, mainly all our members' shops! We currently have over 70 team members, which I refer to as "the pack!" If you are hunting for unique handcrafted items, we have quite a wonderful variety! It's all good, and we hope you give our Etsy shops a big "paws up!" Let us know your favorites, and share your beagle-tales! We strive to keep our blog posts as friendly, warm, and cuddly as our dogs. Profanity, unwarrented links, and just plain snarling will not be tolerated! Beagles follow the rules of the pack. This blog is family-friendly, just like the American Beagle! Bringing a doggie treat when you visit is always appreciated. Beagles are fabulous chow-hounds! Arrrooooo! ;)
